California Contractor License Renewal – CSLB Requirements

California CSLB License Renewal

California contractors are licensed through the Contractors State License Board (CSLB). The CSLB issues licenses for over 40 different trade classifications.

Renewal Cycle

  • Active license: Renew every 4 years
  • Renewal fee: $450 (active) or $225 (inactive)
  • Renewal notice: CSLB mails notice 60 days before expiry

Requirements for Renewal

  • Pay renewal fee
  • Maintain workers' compensation insurance (or exempt certification)
  • Maintain contractor's bond ($25,000 minimum)
  • No continuing education required (except for asbestos/hazmat)

Expired License Consequences

  • Cannot legally bid on or perform contracted work
  • Penalties for working on an expired license: up to $15,000 fine
  • If expired over 5 years: must re-apply as a new applicant
